Bring a tropical feel to your room while controlling light and airflow with Mannlee’s jalousie windows. The horizontal, overlapping slats open simultaneously by a crank handle, allowing quick ventilation without letting in rain. Customize our jalousie windows in terms of size, color and material to complement your home’s architecture. With their narrow design, these jalousie windows are perfect for fitting smaller spaces. Enjoy both form and function with these unique and visually striking windows that add charm to any room.
Jalousie windows get their name from the Italian word “geloso” meaning jealousy or envy. This references the adjustable horizontal slats that allow variable light and airflow while restricting outward views.
The slanted slats overlap like Venetian blinds, operating similarly to historic window coverings used to control visibility. Modern jalousies retain this ability to “conceal contents from prying eyes.”
While less common in new construction, jalousie windows are still produced, sold and installed today. Companies like ours offer aluminum and wood jalousies to suit tropical, coastal, historic and eclectic architectural styles desiring their decorative, breezy aesthetic.
Custom jalousie shapes, colors and slat sizes are also available to match existing installations or create signature looks.
Downsides of jalousies include lower energy efficiency, weathering risks, and limited security compared to alternatives. Gaps between slats can allow dust inside and heat/cooling loss year-round. Rattling from strong winds may also occur.
With accessible exterior slats requiring a tool to open, jalousies pose security issues. However, storm coverings, locking mechanisms and modified materials minimize these drawbacks for modern homes.
The main difference lies in position and movement. Jalousie windows feature horizontal glass slats layered vertically that tilt open. Louvers have solid or glass slats set horizontally in movable vertical frames allowing airflow.
However, louvers do not fully close to a sealed position. Jalousies expand and contract to regulate light, air and views better than stationary louvers.
Upgrading to laminated or tempered slat glass deters easy breakage. Attaching protective bars across jalousies prevents forceful entry while still allowing adjustment. Security film coatings make slats harder to shatter while letting light filter through.
For ventilation and security, install jalousies with locking mechanisms only accessible from indoors. Smart home systems can also trigger alarms if jalousies are tampered when armed.
Jalousie windows are interchangeably called slatted windows, louvred windows or Venetian windows. These names all refer to their distinct rows of horizontal glass slats. In Europe, the term persienne windows is also used, taken from the French word for shutters which jalousies resemble in form and function when closed.
